Soon-to-be 65-year-old Jerry McLard has been living out of a homeless shelter in Winchester, Virginia for eight years, answering phones and doing laundry to make ends meet.
After years of saving he's finally got more than enough money for an apartment of his own--but he's giving it all away instead.
"Just giving back what people have given me," said McLard when asked why he was donating $2,500 to charity.
FOX reports that the generous senior will be doling out $1,000 to the Winchester Rescue Mission, $1,000 to the Community Coalition Action Project and $500 to a free clinic that he says saved his life with an early cancer diagnosis.
"If I hadn't lived here, I might not be talking to you today," the still-homeless man told Fox, noting that he loves being at the shelter and works there seven days a week. All McLard hopes for in return is that when somebody sees a homeless person they remember that "they're people too."
