STEPS, Jordan
Whenever possible during the children’s programs we conduct, we endeavour to provide basic eye tests to the participating children with the aim of detecting previously unsuspected problems. If a problem is found, overseers and parents are encouraged to refer the child to an eye doctor for further investigation. STEPS works with participating dentists and opticians to provide free dental checks and optical screening for children from poor neighbourhoods. Each visit serves a group of 20 children whose medical reports are given to their teachers and families. The visits are followed by a fun outing to an indoor or outdoor playground, along with snacks. Early detection is important for children as vision deficiency can lead to poor performance in school. The program also helps to instill good hygiene habits through the donation of a toothbrush and toothpaste to each participant. When it is discovered that a child requires further care, STEPS, parents and teachers do follow up.
Everest Region, Nepal
Starting in 2012 until 2017 will be our 6th consecutive year collaborating with volunteer dentists, doctors and students from Taiwan and the USA. These professionals and other volunteers give of their time, care, concern, and expenses to help those less fortunate in the area of dental hygiene and health. It is a special privilege to be able to work together, as they have helped hundreds of children each year in Nepal, who cannot afford even the basics of health care.
