Camp New Horizon, Guatemala
The children served by Camp New Horizons live in orphan group homes operated by public and private foundations and institutions. We also organize events for those living in hospices for children with terminal illnesses, including AIDS. We are a Christian project and a large part of our mission is to encourage children to connect with God through nature, forming a close and lasting relationship with the Creator.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates that there are more than 370,000 orphans in Guatemala. Camp New Horizons is a long-term project to provide opportunities for children in orphan institutions and hospices to connect with nature, learn about their environment, and have recreational opportunities their group homes are unable to provide due to lack of space or funding. The Camp facilities include the following:
In addition to the benefits for the children, another important part of our mission is to provide opportunities for volunteers to connect with needy children, acting as counselors, storytellers, activity coordinators, sports coordinators, craft project creators, or nature hike and excursion organizers. An important goal is to offer opportunities for volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life to interact with needy children, form lasting friendships and contribute meaningfully to the happiness and self-esteem of the children.
